How do you go about registering a domain name?
When you purchase a domain name with either a domain name registrar or through the registrar your web hosting company uses, you must pay the registration fee. Keep in mind that not all registrars offer web hosting and not all web hosts offer domain registration. Also, some of the best web hosting companies will include the cost of the domain name in the web hosting package. If you do choose to register your domain name with your web hosting company, make sure the name gets registered under your name and not the name of the web host otherwise you may not have full rights and access to use this name later if you decide to switch web hosting providers.
After the domain name is paid for, do I own it?
Technically, no. Instead when you purchase the registration of the domain name you are actually leasing the name. This lease grants you all rights reserved and is copyrighted to you. You select the term for which you will register the domain name, 1 year is typically the minimum but some registrars will let you pay 5 or 10 years in advance.
How do I renew my domain name?
Typically when you register your domain name you have to renew it annually for a certain fee. Making sure your contact information on your domain name registration is correct is crucial. The domain registrar will let you know when your domain name registration renewal is coming up but if your contact info changes or is incorrect and they can’t get a hold of you, you will be responsible for remembering to renew your domain name. If you fail to pay your renewal fee, your domain name will once again be available to the general public for purchase.
Can I change or transfer my domain name?
Yes you are able to transfer your domain name, this often takes place when someone switches from one web host provider to another. You also have the option to sell your domain name and someone buying the domain may wish to have it with a different registrar, requiring a domain name transfer. There are some rules about transferring domain names. Read our Transferring Domain Names article for more information.
